Lehigh University’s Amazing Solar Energy Machine Is A High-Tech Marvel

February 7, 2024 by Recycle Daniel Leave a Comment

Hey there, young explorers! Today, we’re diving into the world of incredible science and technology at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania. Guess what? They have a brand-new, super cool solar machine that’s not just amazing but also helping to power their entire campus! Let’s unravel the magic of this high-tech solar equipment!

Lehigh University, in the heart of Pennsylvania, recently set up something called a “solar thermal concentrator.” It’s not just a fancy name; it’s a fantastic invention that uses the power of the sun to create energy. Imagine a superhero gadget, but instead of capes, it wears shiny solar panels!

Now, why is this solar concentrator so special? Well, first off, it’s like a superhero sidekick for the students at Lehigh. It’s not just sitting there looking cool; it’s also helping students learn and conduct exciting experiments. It’s like a gigantic science playground!

This solar wonder has a powerful thermal capacity of 10 kilowatt hours, which means it can produce a lot of clean energy. That’s like having your own mini-sun right on campus! Students at the Energy Research Center are having a blast setting up experiments with this concentrator, exploring the wonders of renewable energy.

But wait, there’s more! Lehigh University didn’t do this alone. They teamed up with friends from the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics and Solarflux Energy Technologies, a company from nearby Reading, Pennsylvania. Together, they created a parabolic dish that follows the sun all day, like a sunflower turning to catch every ray of sunshine.

Solarflux Energy Technologies, the genius behind this invention, calls it their flagship product. They’ve made it super efficient, cost-effective, and easy to install. Imagine putting together a giant puzzle that captures the sun’s power – that’s what they did! They even worked with another university, Penn State, to test this amazing technology.

Now, here’s the fun part! Professor Carlos Romero, the director and principal research scientist at the Energy Research Center, introduced his renewable energy class to this solar wonder. Using local photovoltaic panels, the concentrator tracks the sun with a two-axis system, a charge-coupled device camera, and GPS – it’s like having a high-tech sun-chasing robot!

John Fangman, the co-founder and chief technology officer of Solarflux, gave the students an exclusive look at the machine. He explained the design and how it works, connecting all the things the students learned in class to the real world. It’s like having a superhero inventor teach you the secrets of renewable energy!

This experience wasn’t just about textbooks and classrooms. It was about getting hands-on with the future of clean energy. These students got a sneak peek into the world of technology, seeing how renewable energy systems function in real life. It’s like being a scientist in a superhero lab!

So, there you have it, young adventurers! Lehigh University’s high-tech solar equipment is not just a machine; it’s a ticket to a world where science and sustainability join forces. Who knows, maybe one day you’ll invent something even more fantastic and help save the planet, just like the amazing minds at Lehigh University!
